Meet a few of Dr. Marler's piano students from previous semesters:
Valerie Bruinsma and Anne Marie Padelford
Valerie Bruinsma comes from Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a senior music education major. Valerie spent last year studying music and french in angers, France. Valerie likes to play the piano and along with Anne Marie was a recent winner in the Belmont Concerto/Aria competition with the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos.
My name is Anne Marie Padelford, and I'm from Jackson, Tennessee, which is about 2 hours from Belmont. Music has always been an important part of my life, and I have played the piano for most of it. I became really inspired to play the piano around my junior year in high school, and since I've been here at Belmont, Dr. Marler has fed that inspiration and has given me more direction in my playing. I'm not really sure exactly what I want to do with my playing ultimately, perhaps conducting or teaching, but I know that it will definitely shape the rest of my life. Valerie and Marie were winners in January 2002 of the University Concerto competition. They will be performing the Poulenc Concerto for two pianos with the orchestra in April of 2002.
Amy Zigler
Amy is a graduate performance student here at Belmont University. She completed her Bachelor's degree at the University of Alabama in 2000. Also a graduate teaching assistant, she is a private instructor in the Belmont Academy and a theory assistant. Amy is presently working the Beethoven Sonata in A-flat major, Op, 110; the Chopin Ballade in A-flat, the Schumann concerto in a minor, Debussy's Estampes and some pieces by Milhaud. Her masters recital is planned next year, 2003.
Chris Cropsey
Chris hails from Mt. Juliet, TN, a small town outside Nashville. He is currently a Music Major with a minor in Youth and Recreational Ministry. Chris isn't sure exactly what he wants to do with his music, but he knows he loves playing. To him, music is an extension of identity in many ways. In addition to Chris's solo repertoire, he is working on the Beethoven Concerto No. 1.
Laura Rosser
Laura Rosser is a sophomore from Knoxville, TN, who is majoring in Ministry with a Piano minor. For years she has been a church pianist, performer, and accompanist. At Belmont she accompanies Chorale and Belmont Pops, in addition to pursuing classical study. In January 2002 Laura was a winner in the University concerto competition with the Saint Saens Concerto in g minor. She will be presented in performance with the orchestra in April. She just started working on the Mozart A minor sonata, k.310 and the Ravel's Jeux d'eau.
Mark Woodward
Mark Woodward is native American from Dalton, GA. His main love is playing the ukulele and walking around with no shoes on. He is interested in connecting with his mother the Earth as well as getting a nice foot tan. Sometimes he practices studying or running, or his major- commercial piano tuning for dummies. Life is full and fun and running and jumping and smiling are encouraged. (Mark is actually a very talented pianist that learns music extremely fast and plays with a lot of performance flair.)
Michael Berg
Michael Berg is a Religion / Psychology Major from Birmingham, Alabama. The son of two music teachers, Michael has been involved in some form of musical activity almost his whole life, and can't imagine life without it; hence the music minor amidst this already horrible schedule. He enjoys football, hockey, reading, and playing the guitar as well as the piano. (Also likes long walks on the beach.)
Piano Lit. discussion: Monika Hasenberg, Miyuki Shimanda, Kimberlee Turnbough:
My name is Kimberlee Turnbough. I am a married student here at
Belmont. Currently, I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in piano performance for the purpose of developing my skill and repertoire as a pianist. I am a second-semester freshman, and as a student of Dr. Marler, I am very excited and hopeful about my continuing studies with him as well as my future in a graduate program..
Miyuki Shimando
Miyuki is from Japan and is studying classical and commercial piano. She is working on the Concerto No. 3 in C minor by Beethoven and a work by Rachmaninoff as well as other pieces.

Joel Bolen:
Joel is a graduate student in piano performance. He is preparing for his recital which will include a Beethoven Sonata, a large work by Ravel, the Scherzo in C sharp minor by Chopin, a series of nocturnes by various composers including Chopin and The Four Blues by Copland. Joel is very interesting in accompanying and vocal coaching and may pursue a doctorate in that field.
Dawn Mooney
I am from New Castle, Pennsylvania and this is my third year at Belmont. My major here is Commercial Piano, but I enjoy all genres of music. After completion of school, I plan on pursuing songwriting and acting. Specifically, I am interested in writing pop music and acting in comedies. (Dawn his holding her new CD which was recorded recently.)
Monika Hasenberg:
I am an exchange student from the Hochschule in Dresden. I have stayed one year in Belmont. In Dresden I will continue with my majors in music education and history. I may teach in High school. (Monika is playing a variety of literature including works by Scarlatti, Copland and Brahms.)
I am Steve Hyman. I am a graduate student in Piano Performance. I am semi-retired as a physician. I have always wanted to study music and have decided to take a new career path. I now have the time to devote to music, instead of music being a sideline. I hope to get a DMA after my masters degree. I have no specific musical goals now, but I'm sure they will develop as time goes on. I am working on the Chopin Concerto in f minor, Barber's Excursions, the Bach English Suite in a minor and other pieces. (Steve is extremely musical in his Romantic interpretations)
